CCP eligibility tests were given to students on February 11th at Struthers High School.
CCP stands for College Credit Plus. Students can take college classes while in high school and middle school. It is available for grades 7-12. Students take a test to determine what classes they are eligible to take. Students in Struthers can take classes at the high school, online or on campus at YSU.
Brian Garcar is a teacher at Struthers high school who teaches some of the math college classes students are able to take. He has always taught at Struthers and has been teaching for 13 years. He loves watching his students progress into the best versions of themselves.
CCP is a good opportunity for students.
“I believe students definitely benefit from it because they are earning credits for both college and high school which looks good on their transcript and prepares them for what college will be like,” says Garcar.
Anyone can take CCP if they try and qualify.
“Anyone can do CCP if they have the right motivation. Like for math there are certain skills you need in order to succeed but I think anyone can do it,” says the teacher.
There is no cost to take CCP classes if you are taking them through YSU. One thing to remember is that they do affect your GPA just like a regular high school class would. Depending on the college, you can transfer the credits that you earned from YSU to another college.
Taking the test doesn’t mean you’re obligated to take classes.
“If you decide you don’t want to do it after taking the test you don’t have to, but you might as well try,” says Garcar.
