“10 Things I Hate About You” is a popular rom-com movie based loosely off of William Shakespear’s popular play called “The Taming of the Shrew.” Love, hate and a ton of drama–this classic movie has it all and even makes you question everything you thought you knew about love.
A highschool student, Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), cannot date Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) until her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) has a boyfriend–due to their dad’s strict new rules. So Cameron pays a mysterious boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) to allure Kat, so that Bianca can finally go out with the new kid in school. Patrick does everything in his power to put Kat’s guard down, but it doesn’t come easy because she is anti-social and refuses to change herself to be liked. Before he knows it, Patrick begins to fall for Kat despite the money he was getting paid. When he stops asking for money, Kat figures out what happened, leaving her heartbroken. In the end, they find their way back to each other expressing the love they share for one another.
“10 Things I Hate About You” has little to no flaws throughout the entire movie. In fact, it has many strengths such as relatable characters, profound dialogue and even talented young actors. The characters in the movie are the opposite from simple; they have layers that you have to pay attention to in order to fully understand the way they are feeling. This movie shows the way love can be shown in an abundance of ways, and isn’t always easy.
This movie has in-depth characters and emotion, but sometimes it felt like there were missing parts to the story. The beginning through the middle was perfect; it showed the development of the characters and the relationships. Toward the end of the movie, it seems rushed, like there was a little more to the story that needed to be told before it came to an ultimate end. If it was a longer movie, then it could have properly ended and filled in the missing pieces for the audience.
“10 Things I Hate About You” deserves a 5/5 because of the relatable characters and the epic love story between Patrick and Kat. This movie can teach valuable lessons that teenagers need to know, like not changing yourself for others. If you like classic rom-coms that also have humor, this is perfect for you.
