The Los Angeles Lakers have pulled off a huge move by trading for the superstar Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in a deal that sends Anthony Davis to Dallas.
The trade changes everything for the Western Conference and gives the Lakers commitment to building a new championship team.
The stake is the Lakers future as a contender for the title. Pairing Doncic and LeBron James gives the Lakers one of the ones dynamic duos in NBA history, but the questions are about the team chemistry defense.
“We felt this was a necessary move to ensure our long term success,” Lakers GM Rob Pelinka said.
Doncic, a five-time All-NBA selection, has been the face of the Mavericks since entering the league in 2018. However, reports say the Mavericks were worried about his health and defense issues played a role in the trade request.
The transition won’t be easy, as Doncic will need to adjust to playing alongside another ball dominant superstar in James. The Lakers must address their defense after losing Davis.
“Defense wins championships, and we believe Anthony Davis gives us the best chance to compete,” Mavericks GM Nico Harrison said.
The move also comes with significant financial problems for Doncic. By leaving Dallas, he forfeits eligibility for a “Designated Veteran Player Extension,” potentially costing him $32 million. Additionally, California’s high state income tax will further impact his earnings.
“Despite these concerns, Doncic remains optimistic about his new chapter in Los Angeles. His Lakers debut is expected once he fully recovers from a calf strain,” said Pelinka.
Doncic said he’s excited and ready for a new start.
