SHS students spread love this Valentine’s Day by making small cards for the elderly at Maplecrest nursing home in Struthers. This is the first time the high school students have done this, but they hope to continue this for years to come.
The project was constructed by English/Journalism teacher Mrs. Mickler. She is the Medical Careers, Interact and Future Teachers Club advisor. The students in these clubs do many different things for their community, and this specific project had a great turnout for it being the first time it was introduced.
Mickler thought of the idea in hopes to brighten the residents’ day this holiday.
Mickler says, “I hope they bring smiles to their faces. I think they will be happy.”
These cards are just one example of a selfless act of kindness Mickler’s clubs bring to people in the community. Such acts can bring a sense of belonging or self worth. Lots of residents either don’t have vistiors or their families don’t acknowledge the holiday, so hopefully these cards bring them a little bit of joy.
Mickler believes the cards can symbolize an act of kindness that can impact others.
“The sense of thoughtfulness goes a long way; just to know people are thinking of others is a simple gesture that goes a long way,” says Mickler.
Sometimes during the process of the club’s involvement in the community many things can go wrong, or not as planned. Fortunately, the cards brought no problems to Mickler or the students.
Mickler faced no issues, as long as they’re turned in on time, all should be good.
Mickler says, “I have no problems right now; I hope to have all the cards back by the due date.”
