Sixteen-year-old Hetty is quarantined on an island with other students due to the tox. Which is a parasite and disease that has affected everything and everyone in many different ways.
In the book “Wilder Girls,” the tox began to affect the teachers and students one by one, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Leading to the island becoming separated from the rest of the world, and they are left to fend for themselves. The girls at the Raxter School know not to wander beyond the fence, where that tox has made the woods more wild and dangerous. But when Byatt, Hetty’s best friend, goes missing Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking the rules and going outside the fence. But when she goes beyond the fence, she discovers all of the hidden truths about the tox and the lies they have been told, on the mysterious island of Raxter.
The characters in “Wilder Girls” made the book more intriguing and interesting. Some of the main characters are Hetty, Byatt, Reese and Ms. Welch. In the book, the characters form their groups and who they will trust to be with, leaving the students and the teachers separated. The Headmistress, Ms. Welch never cared about the girls, even though she always pretended she did. For example, when they got in shipments of supplies, she would always throw most of them back into the water. This shows how divided the characters were, even though they were on Raxter Island together. However, Hetty, Byatt and Reese would do anything for each other, and they were always the core group of friends throughout the book. Overall, some of the characters may not have liked each other, but that contributed to the plot, and moving the book forward.
The setting in the book “Wilder Girls” is Raxter Island, which is unknown and has an eerie atmosphere. This setting makes the book advance because without this setting, certain events would not have happened. If the woods were not as mysterious, it would not be a big deal that Hetty went outside the fence. The setting also creates a creeping fear through the narration of the story. Also, the girls would not have had such a hard time surviving after the tox was discovered if they were not on the stranded island. Moreover, the setting completes the plot, and without this setting, the book would not have been as entertaining.
All in all, the book “Wilder Girls” gets a 4 out of 5 stars because all the details were great. This book would be recommended to someone because it is a good read, and it makes you want to read more to see what’s going to happen next.
