Texas and ASU came into this game knowing it was gonna be a battle being both ranked in the top 6.
Texas pulled through in an overtime shocking play that helped win them the game in double overtime on Wednesday, January 1, with Texas defeating ASU 39-31.
Texas quarterback Quin Ewers had himself a really good game putting up some impressive stats going 20/20 completing 322 yards passing with 3 touchdowns and one interception.
Steve Sarkisian, Texas Longhorns head coach, said he believes when the time is needed his best players will show up and they proved that today.
Sarkisian said, “I know about our group is when our backs are against the wall and when our best is needed our best shows up time and time again and the resiliency that these guys showed today was something as a coach makes you really proud.”
The Sun Devils had a rough first 3 quarters not generating much offense and only putting up 8 total points.
But starting the 4th quarter, they started to show why they were a playoff team coming back 16 points and putting the game into double overtime.
Running back Cam Skattebo had a very impressive game having 30 carries 143 rushing yards 2 TDs along with a passing touchdown with 8 receptions and 99 receiving yards.
Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State head coach, believes that his players didn’t start that game off too hot but they didn’t give up and continued to fight back to get in a position to win.
Dillingham said, “We started off not so great and the way the guys battled back is remarkable like I told him if they could rewind in the locker room I hate to lose more anybody, but now that it’s over when you can reflect and where these guys have come is is an incredible Testament to the team.”
Texas came into this season having really high hopes after having some pretty good success last year in the college football playoffs and were hoping to make an even further run this year and compete for a national championship.
Texas was eliminated last year by Washington in the first round and was devastated hoping to have a bounce back year.
Sarkisian said he has confidence still even though his team is major underdogs he knows his team will compete with Ohio State.
Sarkisian said, “I could probably poll everybody in this room and you’d probably all agree — [Ohio State is] the favorite to win the game. That’s OK. That’s football. That’s sport. That’s why we have to do what we do, so I’m not going to back off of what I said. The reality is the reality.”
But in the end, Texas Longhorns were the stronger team pulling up the walk off touchdown in the double overtime and it was proven in the late quarters even though Arizona State played tremendous, coming back 16 points having an amazing game and competing to go to a national championship.
