The “Gossip Girl’’ series is a book adaptation of the popular novels written by Cecily Von Ziegesar.“Gossip Girl” takes you inside the shocking lives of wealthy teenagers, where secrets aren’t safe even with those you are closest to.
This popular TV show revolves around the lives of privileged teens living on New York’s Upper East Side. The story’s narrator is an unidentified blogger that only goes by “Gossip Girl,” who lets out secrets and outrageous behavior of the “elite.” The main characters include Serena Van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), an old partier and her best friend Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), or otherwise known as “Queen Bee.” While Gossip Girl stirs up drama of the so called “tight knit” group, relationships are tested and family is falling apart. The series has themes of friendship, betrayal and the pressure of being perfect in everyone’s eyes but your own. “Gossip Girl” shows the huge impact of social media on personal lives, and the consequences of regrettable actions that are not reversible. With “Gossip Girl” around nobody is ever safe, even being across the country.
“Gossip Girl” is known for its great character development. The way the story unfolds throughout the seasons makes you question yourself on your opinions of the characters. The show begins while they are still juniors in high school but follows them through college and adult life. As the characters grow closer bonds, they become more vulnerable with each other, letting each other fully into their lives. The growth of everyone in the show leaves a huge impact on the audience, making the show more relatable and watchworthy.
Something that would have made the show even better is having a more realistic high school life. Sometimes while watching you may notice that the lives of these characters being portrayed is unrealistic, compared to real life teenage struggles. The show relies heavily on drama, which can come across as unrealistic. Also, the show’s main focus on richness and wealth may send mixed messages to the audience about what truly matters. “Gossip Girl” does however channel what it lacks into character relatableness.
“Gossip Girl” is an intriguing show for teens in high school who need a sensational new watch. This show easily deserves a 4.5/5 star review because of the drama filled episodes and complex characters we meet.
