Did you know that men are more likely to engage in risky behaviors as a coping mechanism, such as substance abuse and reckless driving due to poor mental health? Men’s mental health is an important topic because it can lead to suicidal thoughts and even attempts of suicide.
Men’s mental health should be brought to light because it is often overlooked in society.
Men’s mental health can also lead to violent behavior because it can impair their judgment, impulse control and ability to manage emotions. From the article, “Mental Illness and Violence: Debunking Myths, Addressing Realities,” it states, “Overall, people with serious mental illness—which generally refers to those with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder—are somewhat more likely than members of the general public to commit acts of violence, research shows.” This explains how people with serious mental illnesses are more expected to perform acts of violence or aggression towards other people.
Some may say that men with mental illnesses are just people, and because they are men, their mental illness isn’t not a big deal. Although they are people too with feelings, this statement is not completely true. Men with mental disorders such as depression, BPD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ect, should get help as soon as they can. This would prevent them possibly hurting themselves or another person.
Men need to reach out and ask for help when they need it. Although most men may think it’ll seem not masculine, it is absolutely not. Asking for help when you need it is a normal thing, and there are people there to help you for a reason.
Overall, men’s mental health is an important topic because men having poor mental health can lead to violent/aggressive behavior, and because everyone deserves help when they need it most.
