No.1 ranked Kansas was upset 76-63 by unranked Creighton on December 4 coming off a 3-game losing streak. They came out with great teamwork and playing as a team.
Creighton came out hungry for a victory and to turn around this season.
Junior Pop Issacs led the game with a high of 27 points and their 7’1” center Ryan Kalbrenner followed with 17 points 10 rebounds and outstanding performance by both of them.
Head Coach Greg Dermotts thinks this season is going to be a great season getting this big win early.
“We beat not just a great team, but a great program,” says Dermotts.
They showcased their great style of moving the ball and breaking down the defense and moving the ball up court fast. They had 3 guys with double digits putting on a show.
Kalbrenner led the team with 5 defensive rebounds and 5 offensive rebounds giving them second chance points.
“It was going to take a special effort on our part on both ends of the floor. Guys are beat up, guys are sick, and they found a way. I’m really proud of my team,” says Dermotts.
Creighton never trailed in this game leading the first half 41-40 with 17:31 left in the first half then came out with a 10-0 run hitting two three pointers from Issacs and two dunks from Kalbrenner.
The game was close and they knew if they didn’t go on a run Kansas was, so they stepped up and played very well and forced Kansas to call a timeout cause the crowd was electric.
“I haven’t quite had a moment like that in college,” says Issacs.
Standout Issacs put on a phenomenal show in this game and was a huge part of this game. He led the team to this victory keeping his teammates in this game and not letting them get in there emotions in the game.
Issacs doesn’t just impact the game with his scoring ability.
“I try to help my teammates as best as I can to keep them in the game at all times,” says Issacs.
