The Pogues, after finding the gold from El Dorado, return to Outer Banks and try to go back to living a normal life but instead they find themselves drawn into a new mission which is to look for Blackbeard’s Blue Crown.
In the beginning, the Pogues are rebuilding their lives by opening a bait and tackle shop which was named Poguelandia 2.0. Later, conflict starts to occur when they experience financial setbacks and difficulties which forces them to have to go back to their old ways in order to make money. They meet Wes Genrette (David Jensen) who claims he has information about Blackbeard’s hidden Blue Crown. As they try to look for evidence to find this crown, JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) finds out that his biological father is Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane). As the story progresses Groff makes JJ and his friends trust him more and more. This leads them to face new enemies, challenges, complex relationships and facing the potential loss of their home.
“Outer Banks” did a great job at building suspense and developing the plot. Each episode was interesting and easy to binge watch for days. What made it most intriguing was the bond between characters that you can almost feel the emotions between them and what they go through. The plot had many unexpected twists and tensions between the Kooks and Pogues that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Additionally, it sets a darker tone and highlights each of the characters’ development from season 1 to season 4. Throughout the show you almost feel connected to the characters, so in the end, it leaves you off with an emotional ending which was the death of JJ Maybank. Due to JJ’s impact on the storyline, it unpacks the never ending drama and tension which keeps the story going.
During the ending, it almost felt as if it was rushed and JJ Maybank left too soon. It was shocking and unexpected which left most viewers in confusion. JJ is a likeable and humorous character so killing him off kind of ruined the show since he contributed so much to how good the show is. Some felt like the overall plot was now inconsistent due to this and how the characters reacted to JJ’s death didn’t seem right at all. Not only that but the main characters didn’t seem to have their old personalities compared to other seasons. This season kinda went off of its original summer feeling and instead gave a darker tone which made it lacked its original adventurous spirit. Furthermore, this season twisted too many subplots which made it kind of hard to follow.
Overall, this “Outer Banks” season earns 4/5 stars because of its development of the main characters, suspenseful plot, lovable characters and most importantly the thrilling storyline. Even though the ending was unexpected, “Outer Banks” will always be worth watching.
