Struthers Varsity Volleyball team put up a tough fight for their 2024 season. They won their first round playoff game but lost in the second. Despite the loss, the girls fought hard. Standout player, Gianna Martin, a sophomore on varsity, has improved and achieved so much this year.
Martin leads her team in kills per set, total kills, hitting percentage and total blocks. She also won Student Athlete of the Week and 1st Team All Conference this year. With all of these accomplishments, the player sets a high standard.
Martin reflects on her team’s performance this year.
“I think I did well this season. We have some losses but I feel that no matter the outcome, at the end of the day we always have fun playing together,” says the athlete.
Volleyball is a huge part of Martin’s life. Since she started playing in seventh grade, she has always stayed dedicated to her sport and her academics. Her hard work and dedication reflects her performance on the court.
The player outlines her process when preparing for big games.
“Positive thinking and telling yourself positive thoughts about yourself does improve your playing. If you let yourself know that you can do anything, you will pursue and be a better player,” says the athlete.
The Struthers volleyball team has a lot of heart and works hard for their wins. Martin finds it helpful to play with such a supportive and connected group of girls.
The athlete appreciates her team and coaches.
“I love that my team will pick everyone up no matter the score. No matter how bad we are doing we are always there for each other. I love how my coaches push me to be a better player. My freshman year they saw something in me and worked on me until it came out. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities they have given me, even at my young age,” says Martin.
