The Struthers Wildcats Volleyball team played the Boardman Lady Spartans on Saturday October 12.
The game was played to help raise money for breast cancer awareness.
The teams wore special uniforms to show their support for breast cancer. Struthers lost the first two matches by 25-18 and 25-13. They came back in the third set winning 23-25 but ended up losing the game in the fourth set, 25-16.
Melyka West, a junior DS on the varsity team, felt that the team could have played better throughout the game.
“I think overall our team did good. I feel we could have tried a bit harder and really put every last bit of effort into each play. I think at the end of the day, we all had fun, and that’s really all that matters,” says West.
Struthers had a bake sale and 50/50 tickets to win lottery tickets. The JV team girls worked the stands while the varsity players played and the varsity players worked while the JV players played.
West thinks positively about the fundraisers and thinks it was a hit.
“We had a bunch of people show up and support. We raised about $457 out of our $250 goal. It was really nice, and we had a bunch of activities/fundraising opportunities,” says the junior.
Although it was the first time the volleyball team held a home pinkout game, it definitely won’t be the last time it happens. As for the seniors it was their first and last home gym game, so it was a night for them to remember.
West took in the last moments she would play on her home court with her senior teammates.
“My favorite part was being able to play with our seniors in our home gym one last time. It was a bittersweet experience,”says the student.
