Mr. Garcar is a math teacher at Struthers High School.
His favorite subject has been math for a while because of the patterns and numbers that it involves.
Garcar created Math Club because of the amount of problem-solving students that Struthers has, and he believes it will become a full-time club because of the growing numbers of participants.
“During my time at Struthers, I found that there were many students in school who were very good at math and problem solving. I wanted to start a club that would allow the students to apply these skills in different ways. In Math Club, we play games that involve problem solving and math skills. I believe that the students have a good time while in Math Club. Each year that we have had Math Club, we have had more members join, so I think it will continue for many more years,” says the Math Club Coordinator.
The soccer coach believes that the most frustrating part of teaching is his own fault because sometimes he struggles to get the point across in his lessons.
The math department head got the job at Struthers because that was the first district that contacted him for a job.
“As I was completing student teaching, I applied to many school districts. Struthers was one of the first schools to call me for an interview and offer a teaching position. I am happy that Struthers gave me the opportunity to teach in the district,” says the Struthers teacher.
Garcar has been teaching for 13 years, but one of the years he was at the middle school.
He likes to make sure that students are on the same page, and they understand the topic he is teaching.
“I try to help students realize that they are capable of solving problems. Once the students have the confidence to complete the work, they typically are willing to learn new material,” says the teacher.
In ten years, the problem solver believes that he will still be teaching math at Struthers.
