Ashton Jeanty, Travis Hunter and Cam Ward are all the top contenders in the race for the Heisman Trophy as this month wraps up. This trophy is the best in college football and can help them get noticed for the NFL draft and boost their draft stock. It’s an important moment for each of these players as they work hard against each other.
As these upcoming week’s close, each of these top contenders faced crucial matchups that could boost or break their Heisman hopes. Jeanty and his team took on the 4th-ranked San Diego State and won 24-56, while Hunter and his team faced off against the 6th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats and ultimately won against them 23-34. Meanwhile, Ward and his team took on the 12th-ranked Duke Blue Devils and beat them 32-53.
Miami Quarterback Ward remains focused on his team’s goal, keeping the Heisman in perspective.
“I loved what the media team did. It’s a blessing that you know I’m in this position, but it really doesn’t bother me. I mean at the end of the day you gotta make football plays to get where you want. My goal is not to be a Heisman Trophy winner; my goal is to win football games and play for a national championship,” says Ward.
Jeanty’s performance these closing weeks were impressive, and he was aware that his closing month matchup against San Diego was going to be somewhat challenging considering they knew he was the prime suspect for the ball. Despite this, Jeanty still took them on and scored 2 touchdowns and got 31 carries, ultimately beating San Diego State.
Boise State running back Jeanty knows the backlash on him while flaunting his current state in the Heisman race.
“Travis, he’s balling for real. He’s doing some stuff we ain’t ever seen nobody do. Personally, I don’t take any offense to it. He’s just speaking his opinion, everybody’s got an opinion. For me, what I’ve been doing hasn’t been done in 36, 37 years, so that’s something special. If I keep that up and break a record that’s been around for 36 years, I feel like you can’t really compete with that,” says Jeanty.
Impressively enough, Hunter led his team through a tight game with the Cincinnati Bearcats showcasing his talents and playmaking abilities. He averaged 17 yards a play, scored 2 touchdowns and caught 9/9 passes he received in that game. Hunter’s ability to play good no matter what led Colorado to a victory.
Colorado wide receiver Hunter confidently spoke about the Heisman race, saying his unique ability to shine on the field make him stand out from other contenders.
“Nobody’s ever done what I’ve been doing, so it’s pretty much that simple. I mean, I have an offensive stack, I sealed the game on defense, I sealed the game on offense. Nobody has ever done that before, and it’s just pretty much easy for me. You can see the game, it speaks for itself for me. I just go out there and play and work hard every day,” says Hunter.
