Ohio State looked impressive in their spring game on April 13th, although there are still some spots to get better at.
Ohio State transfer quarterback Will Howard looked good but not like a championship quarterback during the spring game. Howard went 9/13 with 77 yards. Many think he will be the day 1 starter. Also his biggest competitor Devin Brown played very well going 5/7 adding 66 yards and a touchdown.
Coach Day had many good things to say about the team and toughness.
“If wondering why the Buckeyes buckled their chin straps and knocked heads Saturday in the spring game–the first time OSU coach Ryan Day made full tackling part of the annual scrimmage–look no further than last year’s Michigan game. Or Oregon game. Or even the Rose Bowl against Utah, in which OSU went airborne to defeat the Utes after abandoning a deficient running game and witnessing another performance of patty-cake defense,” says Oller.
Ohio State’s run game looked very efficient; something they’ve been looking to get better at since Day had taken over in 2019. They have transfer running back Quinshon Judkins, returning running back Treveyon Henderson, and a few freshmen and walk-ons got some carries during the game. Ohio State looks to work load these running backs this year as they have been an air raid offense for a few years now.
Chip Kelly speaks on the offense he plans to run this upcoming fall.
“It’s got to be a total collaborative effort… It’s not my offense, it’s not Ryan’s offense, it’s not (wide receivers coach Brian Hartline)’s offense, it’s not (offensive line coach Justin Frye)’s offense. It’s Ohio State’s offense. Put all those minds together and hopefully, we’ll come up with a pretty good game plan,” says Kelly.
Ohio State still plans to win the national championship, and Ryan Day looks to earn his title having a loaded roster all around. It’s just a matter of time until Ohio State is on top again. Day and the Buckeyes look to push forward and prove everyone wrong this fall.
Fans have high hopes for this upcoming season.
“Ohio State returns several key starters on offense and defense. The Buckeyes plucked some top talent out of the transfer portal. After three straight losses to Michigan, the pressure is on Ryan Day to win big in 2024,” says Schutte.
