Guardians Manager Terry Francona told reporters after Sunday’s game against the Oakland A’s in Mesa, Arizona, that the right handed pitcher Shane Bieber is in line to start the season opener against Seattle on March 30th at T-Mobile Park.
Beiber threw three scoreless innings against Oakland in a game that ended in a 4-4 tie at HoHoKam Park. In two Cactus league starts, Beiber has thrown five scoreless innings in his career.
Last season was a bounce back year for Beiber. He went 13-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 31 starts. He struck out 198 and pitched 200 innings for the first time since 214 ⅓ innings.
Beiber is one of the only three American league pitchers to reach 200 innings last year.
He was asked recently how he felt compared to a year ago at this time when he was still working his way back from the injury in 2021.
“I feel great. I’m very encouraged where I’m at and how I feel. The silver linings of a year ago, and even farther back than that, I have a point in time to look back and be grateful for where I’m at today,” says Beiber.
“I’m excited for what’s to come,” says the pitcher.
